Oswego County Schools Compete for Battle of the Books Champion Title
Diligence in reading earned several Oswego County schools first place in the regional Battle of the Books competition, coordinated through the School Library System of Oswego County, a component of the Center for Instruction, Technology & Innovation (CiTi).
First place at the third and fourth grade level went to the Central Square School District team comprised of Samuel Fallows, Cameron Kozubowski and Blake Sheldon with 112 points.
First place at the fifth and sixth grade level was a tie of 128 points between the Fulton City School District team comprised of Megan Acker, Trevor Hendrickson and Harper McClave and the Oswego City School District team comprised of Anna Cloonan, Miah Metott and Addyson St. Onge.
The Central Square School District team of Jordan Grevelding, Megan Wolf and Sarah Wolf took first place at the seventh and eighth grade level with 72 points.
Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Central School District took first place at the high school level with a score of 88 points. Team members were Salvatore Gulisano, Lorraine Sampson and Rose Wilson.
The event took place at the Oswego City High School, where a panel of judges read questions relating to 10 books that all of the students studied the last few months. All participants in the county competition arrived there by climbing the ranks in their individual school’s building and district level competitions.
“This is so much more than a competition,” said CiTi School Library System Director Marla Yudin. “It’s about the love of reading and learning to work together as a team.”
During the battle, the teams had 30 seconds to name the title and author relating to the question, earning points for each correct answer.
“Even if you don’t win, every one of you has had the opportunity to read 10 more books,” said Oswego Middle School Principal Mary Beth Fierro to the competitors.
